The Mediterranean diet improves bone health of women

The development and maintenance of bone mass are largely related to diet. The most important nutrient for bone health are calcium and phosphorus, which make up 80% to 90% of its mineral content. In addition, proteins and other minerals and vitamins are also essential for bone preservation.

A study of Harokopio University of Athens (Greece) argues that a diet based on high consumption of fish and olive oil and a low red meat intake has a positive impact on bone health of women.

The conclusion of this study, published in 2009 in the journal Nutrition, has been drawn from research conducted by a group of researchers at the university who have studied the effect of monitoring a Mediterranean-type diet rich in vegetables, oil olive oil, low in meat and dairy products and moderate consumption of alcohol on bone mass of 220 adult women in Greece.

The research results suggest that this eating pattern has elements to preserve the properties of bone during adulthood.
